What is Antipasto?

Pronounced /an-tee-PAH-stoh/

Definition

Antipasto is the first course of an Italian meal — cured meats, cheeses, marinated vegetables, and bread served before the pasta.

It means "before the meal," not "before the pasta dish" — the plural is antipasti.

A proper Italian meal runs antipasto, primo (pasta or rice), secondo (meat or fish) with contorno (vegetable), then dolce.
