Birra Moretti

The short answer

Birra Moretti is the classic lager of Friuli in Italy's northeast — smooth, malty and balanced, with the famous mustachioed man on the label.

Style
Pale lager, 4.6% ABV
Glass
Tall lager glass, chilled
Strength
About 4.6% ABV

Where it comes from

Birra Moretti has been brewed in Udine since 1859. The man on the label is, or so the story goes, a customer photographed at the brewery's tavern in the 1940s — an image the family liked so much they put it on every bottle.

What you need

  • 1 bottle Birra Moretti, well chilled

How Larry builds it

  1. 01

    Serve cold. 4–6°C (39–43°F).

  2. 02

Pour with a head. Tilt, then straighten.

  3. 03

Pair with hearty food. Its malty balance loves sausages, roasted meats and aged cheese.

Larry’s rule: A touch maltier than Peroni. The one with the moustached man on the label — a real customer, or so the story goes.

Variations worth making

  • Moretti La Rossa

The strong, dark doppelbock of the family.

  • Moretti Zero

    The alcohol-free version.
