Oven to Air Fryer Conversion
Short answer
Lower the oven temperature by 25°F (about 15°C) and cut the cooking time by roughly 20 percent. A dish that bakes 30 minutes at 400°F becomes about 24 minutes at 375°F in the air fryer — check at the 15-minute mark the first time.
The rule
Temperature: subtract 25°F (15°C).
Time: multiply by 0.8, then check early. Air fryers are small convection ovens, and small means fast.
Basket space matters more than either number. One layer, nothing touching, or you are steaming.
Conversion table Larry uses
Italian sausage links: oven 400°F / 25 min → air fryer 375°F / 12–14 min, turned once, pulled at 160°F internal.
Peppers and onions: oven 425°F / 25 min → air fryer 400°F / 12 min, shaken twice.
Chicken cutlets, breaded: oven 425°F / 20 min → air fryer 400°F / 12 min, sprayed with oil.
Leftover sausage and peppers: 350°F for 4–5 minutes, no oil.
Meatballs: oven 400°F / 20 min → air fryer 375°F / 11–13 min.
What does not convert
Wet batters blow off in the airflow. Breaded, yes; beer-battered, no.
Anything that needs to stay covered — braises, baked ziti with a lot of sauce — belongs in the oven.
Cheese-topped dishes go in for the last 2 minutes only, or the top scorches before the middle heats.
Common questions
- Do you preheat an air fryer?
- Three minutes at the target temperature is enough, and it matters most for anything you want crisp.
- How long do Italian sausages take in an air fryer?
- 12 to 14 minutes at 375°F, turned once, until the center reads 160°F.
- Can you put foil in an air fryer?
- Yes, under the food, never covering the whole basket — the airflow has to reach the food or nothing crisps.

Quick answer
Why does my Italian sausage come out dry?
Dry sausage is overcooked sausage nine times out of ten — pull it at 160°F (71°C), not 175°F. The other causes are too-lean meat (you need 25 to 30 percent fat), piercing the casings, and cooking over high heat that renders the fat out before the middle is done.
