Sausage & Peppers Party Calculator
Last updated
Quick answer
The normal-appetite defaults are 1.5 links per person for sandwiches or 3 for plates, with 4 oz per raw link, 0.75 bell pepper and 0.5 onion per person. These are editable rule-of-thumb estimates, not exact requirements.
Every feast starts with the same panic: how much sausage do I actually buy? Tell this calculator how many people are coming, whether you're serving sandwiches on rolls or plates, and how hungry the crowd is. It works out links, pounds of sausage, peppers, onions and rolls, rounded up so nobody goes home empty-handed. The numbers are rule-of-thumb estimates, and every assumption behind them is right there to change if your crowd eats like Larry.

How it works & assumptions
Links = guests × links per person for your serving style and appetite. Sandwiches assume one link per roll, so rolls = links × rolls per sandwich. Plates need no rolls.
Pounds = links × ounces per link ÷ 16, rounded up to the nearest quarter pound. Peppers = guests × peppers per person; onions = guests × onions per person, each rounded up to whole vegetables.
The 10% buffer multiplies each quantity by 1.1 before rounding up. Defaults: sandwiches 1 / 1.5 / 2 links (light / normal / hungry), plates 2 / 3 / 4 links, 4 oz raw per link, 0.75 medium bell pepper and 0.5 medium onion per person, 1 roll per sandwich. These are rule-of-thumb estimates, not a guarantee.
Common questions
How many sausages per person for sausage and peppers?
By this calculator's default rule of thumb: 1 link per person for light eaters on sandwiches, 1.5 for normal and 2 for hungry. On plates, 2, 3 or 4 links. You can change every number in the assumptions panel.
How much sausage do I need for 20 people?
With the defaults (normal appetite, sandwiches, 4 oz links), 20 guests works out to 30 links, or 7.5 pounds of raw sausage. Hungry eaters on plates would need 80 links, or 20 pounds. Use the calculator for your exact crowd.
How many peppers and onions per person?
The default assumption is 0.75 of a medium bell pepper and half a medium onion per person, rounded up to whole vegetables.
Should I add a buffer?
If you don't know exactly who is coming, the 10% buffer toggle adds a little extra to every quantity before rounding up. Leftover sausage and peppers make an excellent next-day sandwich.
Are these exact amounts?
No. They are rule-of-thumb estimates based on the assumptions shown. Link sizes, appetites and side dishes vary, so adjust the assumptions to match your crowd and your butcher.
